The painting of an interpretation to the masterpiece of Salvador Dali «The figure at the window» was a good opportunity for me to try myself in a somewhat different line of painting — to switch from abstraction, modern style, to classic lines, views, landscapes. I must say that this quite realistic work had become a kind of exception for the Spaniard, given his usual surrealist style. The original is known to be depicting the artist’s sister looking out of a window at the bay of Cadaques. A certain mystery that I tried to understand is clearly visible through the austere simplicity of the painting.
The main feature of the interpretation is, of course, its different color tonality. Against the original’s restrained palette of the background, the painting by Sergei Ponochenyuka is manifest with its expression of colors: deliberately bright blue of the sky, merging with an equally bright blue bay, the blue shadows and midtones. Accordingly changes the mood — unlike the quiet contemplation of the girl in the original, here in the frame of bright colors it seems to be more emotional, enraptured, delighted.
A simplification of the composition gets the viewer focused on the mood of the character — familiar items are not present here: there is no kerchief on the windowsill, no boat is sailing in the distance, no waves are visible on the surface of the sea.
Nevertheless, the interpretation is fully retaining the characteristic mystery, which is inherent in the original work. «The figure at the window» by Sergei PONOCHENYUK can well be referred to that very intriguing «magic realism» to which critics relate the works of the Spanish painter.
